St George's Day celebrations - Brum - 20th April 2013

The St George's Day celebrations in Birmingham were, in my opinion, a rather low key affair this year. But maybe previous years have spoiled us in terms of entertainment, and maybe spending cuts have cast their evil shadow on the event. Gone was the huge stage with the tribute bands and head-lining artists. There was no jousting, and, worst of all, St George and the Dragon on walkabout resembled something from the children's TV station cbeebies. Nevertheless there was entertainment and it was all in the name of our patron saint, so.....

A "beach" in Chamberlain  Square hosted various entertainments including a Punch and Judy show and Morris dancing. There were a couple of life-guards there but I can't really explain what they were doing.

Getting into the spirit in Victoria Square.

Folk-pop band Waiting for Susan provided excellent entertainment on the podium.

Some shots from the "petting corner". This was a firm favourite with the children (and me!)

The Jockey Morris Men dancers. Morris dancing is absolutely essential for such an occasion.

All of this gave me an excuse to visit my favourite eaterie in my favourite location.
